Permanent magnet brushless motors are capable of providing variable speed outputs. However, in some applications a particular motor’s speed/torque profile may not be sufficient to cover the desired speed/torque range. In these circumstances two options are available. A more powerful and bigger motor could be used to cover the entire range or, alternatively, mechanical gears could be provided for the motor. Both these methods add weight and inefficiencies to the system.
Electronica’s patented design, Electronic Magnetic Gearing (EMG) is achieved by a special configuration of the motor windings and electronic circuitry. Here the motor generates the desired speed/torque profile. This means that it can generate high torque at low speeds and higher efficiencies beyond that achieved by a normal electric motor without the need for larger motors or mechanical gears with moving parts. This technology can also be used in the design of generators.
